Janelle Fernandez made this time-lapse of one of the portrait sessions at the Arthur Capper Senior Center. Selected portraits will be displayed in Canal Park and nearby on Event Day.

Talking pictures This project engages a local historian, Mara Cherkasky, to complement the team of artists working in the Canal Park neighborhoods to collect photographs, videos, interviews, drawings and oral histories from both longstanding and newly arrived residents. Mara provides research to augment the stories and photos the artists are collecting from local participants. This set of portraits is of residents at the Arthur Capper Senior Center. Artists and Capper residents have been meeting since 2012, gatherings where those present can share their stories, their photographs, and their questions about life in this neighborhood. The gatherings have included poetry readings, musical performances, photo sessions, and sometimes cake decorated with edible photographs of the guests. It has been a fantastic experience and This Place Has A Voice sends a huge thank you to Ms. Diallo and all at Capper for the good times to-date and those yet to come. The cumulative result of all works and activities will be available on the September 20th Event Day with projections, presentations, tours and performances. Larger-than-life prints of the people in the photographs below will be attached to walls, stairways, paths, ceilings, in and around Canal Park on the 20th.
